J. Crew Review: Oversized Merino Pocket Sweater

This has been much blogged about and with all the recent free shipping promos I thought I would give it a try. I'm always looking for a slightly longer, slouchier sweater to wear with my ever-increasing array of skinny pants/jeans.

Oversized Merino Pocket Sweater  (in heather grey and nightfall blue) (XS)

Hmm... Maybe I'm too short for this style? I was glad it covered my butt but it just looked frumpy. Like the grey better than the nightfall blue (does anyone else feel like it is sort of an odd/unflattering shade of teal?) The vee is pretty low so definitely requires a cami/shirt something underneath. And although the pockets are a darling touch, they also cause the sweater to be a little lumpy. I would actually prefer no pockets. For this price, a pass, but perhaps I would revisit on sale or in the XXS. Afraid that one might be too snug.

Anyone else try this in the XXS and like it? Have it and love it?

  1. I like the grey better as well. For some reason, I am not crazy about this sweater. I think it is rather shapeless - maybe with skinny skinny leggings? I don't know?

    1. I know! I want to like it so badly but I don't think it's doing me any favors. The idea is right but the execution sort of wrong.

  2. I have this in gray and recently ordered it in the teal blue color. I agree the shade is odd and it will probably be difficult to wear, but I hope to figure it out (it wasn't final sale so we'll see). The gray one is perfect for when I am having a fat day and with the holidays I loved wearing this the other day. It is definitely oversized and shapeless but that is what I like about it (that and the pockets). You are so little though and I think it is too big and overwhelms you, even if you have the right size.

    1. Thanks, Cate! I agree with the overwhelming thing but the "fat day" option is so tempting!

  3. I bought the XXS and love it. I wear a medium in the Tippi...I like to layer it. It has a nice casual feel with Minnies.

    1. Good to hear that you like the XXS. If it pops back I may try it since it is not Final Sale.

  4. I have it in the teal, and I wore it very simply. It is the second outfit in this post: http://mysuperfluities.blogspot.com/2012/11/ootds-teal-grey-and-pink.html. :)

I definitely have this in my closet for the quick runs out to the store or to my son's school, etc. I would love to try dressing it up, but I think I will let it exist in my closet like the winter version of the pool cover-up. LOL.

I love the grey on you since it fits a tad looser. I think the teal one is a bit too "in the middle," neither too loose or too fitted, which means your fab bod is lost.

    1. It looks so adorable on you and I think it is saved by the fact that you are much taller than I am! I agree with you about the grey - something about it just hung better.

  5. Darn it, I was looking for this sweater two months ago in the blue XXS and it was sold out online and supposedly in all stores. But I'm leaving for France in two days (and will be there for 6 months) so I can't order anything online!

I take a slightly slouchy XS in the Tippi (could fit into XXS, but the arms are a tad tight) and the XS in this sweater was humongous on me even for a "slouchy" fit.

    1. It is really big. Big and long which can be unflattering. I think most of us are tempted by the slouchy look but it's so hard to get it just slouchy enough without being sloppy!

  6. I like the gray on you but maybe with some black leggings? I have it in the gray and I am am 5'10 so I think it works although the pockets add some weight to the hips, as you mentioned. I have thrown the downtown field jacket or the excursion vest over it for some structure but I wouldn't dare wear anything except leggings or skinny jeans with it for fear of looking incredibly dowdy.

  7. I think you definitely need the XXS. I almost always wear the same size as you and took the XXS in this one...the XS looked lumpy and messy on me, while the XXS looked more appropriately slouchy. HTH!

    1. That does help = thank you! I may try it in the XXS just to cure my curiosity!

  8. I tried on Nightfall yesterday and couldn't get it to lay flat, very similar to your pictures. I kept pulling it forward to see if it would lay down and look like your pictures of the gray... there may be some cutting difference between the two. I don't think it is just that it has pockets, it is just not cut properly to be both oversized/slouchy and lay in a flattering way.

    1. Glad to hear it's not just me with the nightfall. It's sort of a funky color on my anyway. Love the great but now I'm tempted by the funnelneck hoodie instead. Sort of a different look but still "casual chic"

  9. I think the pockets were a big mistake on this one- the key to such an oversized piece working is to have the perfect drape! Probably better to try a nice grey men's merino v-neck!

    1. Amen, sister! The pockets were such a misguided design element. Without them the sweater has a chance but I know that I would be smoothing them out ALL day long!

  10. You need xxs in this. It's a lovely, relaxed sweater if the sizing is right.
